Every year since
the early 1980's, a pre-race dinner for runners, volunteers, and friends of the
race has been held on the Friday before the race to generate interest and
enthusiasm before the race on Dipsea Sunday.
By the
mid-1990's, the dinner had become a little more formalized and was run by The
Annual Dipsea Race Committee, largely to provide a cross-generational
dialogue...where today's enthusiastic racers could swap race experiences with
previous era standouts, with each other, and with the volunteers and friends who
all are a part of the community tradition.
In 1997, the
responsibility for the Dipsea Dinner was transferred to the newly formed
Foundation. It was a perfect time for that adjustment because the Dipsea Race
was approaching the 100th Anniversary of its first running in 1905, and the
popularity of the race was exceeding the capacity of the trail, which required
the imposition of the current 1,500 runner limit,. It's possible that frustrated
runners who were unable to get into the Race signed up for the dinner as a way
to stay connected. In any case, interest in the dinner continued to build. In
2005 there was a gala dinner event at the Mill Valley Community Center to
celebrate the first century of Dipsea Racing. It was produced by the Foundation
and was attended by almost 300 enthusiastic runners, volunteers, sponsors,
patrons and well-wishers.
This year, the
official pre-race dinner will be held at the Outdoor Art Club in downtown Mill
Valley, a half block away from the race starting line.
